Kitchen Peninsula Base Ideas | Home Guides

The proper kitchen has adequate cabinets that serve specific purposes. Kitchen design has evolved to include separate peninsula bases that work to provide more countertop space with storage space underneath. Peninsula bases are not created equal; some are custom made and attach to the cabinets, while some are freestanding. If you're considering one, there are a few ways to go about it. Space If you have room for a peninsula base, take advantage of it -- most high-end, well-designed kitchens have them. A peninsula can stand alone, or attach to the wall on one side as an extension of the countertop. The most critical issue is space. You need adequate space to walk around the peninsula, with enough room on the inside perimeter to properly utilize the kitchen. Most peninsula bases ...

10 decor ideas for a more stylish living room

Gallery: 10 contemporary kitchens to inspire your next update (belle) Flack_Maxwell_Ct_120320_92740.jpg David Flack used a palette of "materials that age well and look better over time" including black steel, grey render and natural stone in this modernist mansion. The layering of polished plaster render, dark American oak joinery and Cosmic Gold granite in the kitchen creates a moment of indulgence without the need for over-the-top ornamentation. 1599438867325_7Poin...

CLOSEBooks were torn at an outside library in a Detroit public school Thursday morning. (Photo: Used with permission by Derek Clark)Staff members at Greenfield Union Elementary-Middle School are in shock Thursday after they found their student-built outdoor library and gardens in ruin.Vandals left a huge mess — the books were either shredded or soaked with water. Pots were cracked and broken. Bookcases and benches were flipped over. Only one book was left intact. "That garden means a lot. So for it to be damaged was very heartbreaking," Dean of Culture Derek Clark said. The Detroit school outdoor library was an ongoing project spanning five years, built by the school's own students. The library had shelves full of books, with flower pots and benches decorating the yard. Design Ideas for Kitchen Backsplashes Using Glass Tiles | Home Guides

A kitchen backsplash adds a somewhat permanent decorative element to the room; since glass tiles are set in place with a strong adhesive, there's no changing your mind a few weeks after installation, unless you want to redo the entire project. Once you've settled upon a color scheme and a design idea, arranging and rearranging the loose tiles on a table allows you to decide if the colors and layout are right for you. Ombre and Rainbows If your kitchen's decor plays off one main shade, such as a light green, an ombre or fade backsplash enhances the look while accenting it with closely related hues. All tiles used include your focal or main color, plus several shades lighter and darker of that same hue. Start with either dark or light on one side, or the top or bottom, then work ...

Furniture showroom launches in downtown Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — In an era when many businesses are closing their doors, Lisa Faitell is doing the opposite. On August 1, the award-winning interior designer opened Faitell Attractions, a design showroom and curated furniture consignment store on State Street in downtown Santa Barbara.  Aware of the economic challenges wrought by the pandemic, Faitell sensed an opportunity. "Most of my friends and people in the community that know me said, 'oh my gosh, you're so brave!' I interpreted that as: 'You must be crazy!'” Faitell said. "But I realized very quickly that people are spending all this extra time in their homes, looking at their walls and interiors and wanting to make improvements. They're spending money on their homes because they're not spending it on oth...

What a pest: Rodent infestation on the rise

Rats are looking to find new sources of food and shelter in the pandemic. Sponsored by Eastside Exterminators. SEATTLE — Uninvited and unwanted guests can put a damper on just about any occasion. When they’re rodents and other pests, it’s downright cringeworthy. Locally owned and operated Eastside Exterminators has been ridding residences of rodents for more than 50 years. “We are a second-generation pest control company,” said Sharon Roebuck, the company COO. “We've been around since 1969." The daughter of the owner, Deanna Townsend, bought the company from her dad in 2000, her and her partner Alex Altizer. ...

Hands-On with Google Nest Audio

Announced last week during a virtual event alongside new Pixel handsets and the Chromecast with Google TV, Google Nest Audio is the new version of what used to be called Google Home, and it offers a more attractive form factor, better sound, and—go figure—lower pricing than its predecessor. I ordered a pair immediately, intrigued by Google’s ongoing efforts to take on and undercut Sonos. The quick takeaway: Google Nest Audio is a nice advance over Google Home. But it’s no match for any Sonos speaker, including the identically-priced IKEA Symfonisk Wi-Fi Bookshelf Speaker. And Google still doesn’t offer a viable home theater setup with surround sound, while competitors like Amazon, Roku, and Sonos all do. I’m curious that it didn’t introduce such a system alongside the Chromecast with Goog...
