WINNETKA, IL — A midcentury home on the edge of the Skokie Lagoons in Winnetka sold for $640,000 last month.
The four-bedroom, 3,000-square-foot home sits on a half-acre lot on Tower Road overlooking a small village-owned pond.
It was built in 1956 to the northwest of the Winnetka Golf Club as part of the Forestview subdivision, according to property records. The home’s architect and original owner could not be identified.
Its design features a master suite, one bedroom a two-car garage and storage on the right side of its foyer.
On the left side, it has two more bedrooms and a great room with floor-to-ceiling windows facing toward the south and west.
The interior also includes several skylights, hardwood floors and two fireplaces.
The home’s kitchen opens to a screened-in porch and overlooks an outdoor pool in the home’s landscaped backyard.
The property is surrounded by houses worth more than $2 million, according to a listing from @properties agent Karin Zawaski.
“Renovate or build new and you will be transported to a tranquil and serene surrounding,” it said. “Phenomenal potential in a one of a kind setting.”
Property records identify the seller as Donna Powell. According to a 2009 obituary of her late husband, former Winnetka Village Trustee John Powell, the Powells met at Northwestern University in the 1950s and moved from Evanston to Winnetka in 1966.
After retiring from 33 years in the insurance division of IBM, Mr. Powell served as a member and chairman of the Winnetka Caucus Council, head of personnel at his church, where Mrs. Powell has also served in elected leadership positions, and on the boards of the Michigan Shores Club and McCormick Boys and Girls Club, it said.
From 1999 to 2003, Mr. Powell sat on the Winnetka Village Board, serving as historical society liaison, warrant review officer and the village’s representative to the regional emergency dispatch center and the Northwest Municipal Conference, according to a resolution honoring his contributions, which declared he “transmits this Village greater and more beautiful than it was transmitted to him.”
The home was first listed for sale in November 2018 with an asking price just under $850,000, according to public listing records. The price tag was twice reduced last year before dropping to $750,000 in June. An offer was accepted the next month and the sale closed Sept. 15 for $640,750. The property’s new owners have not been identified in public records.
According to the Cook County Assessor’s Office, the property’s 2020 estimated market value is $719,830 for taxing purposes and its annual property tax bill was about $15,500.
