Why the US-China chip war is heating up

© Provided by The Edge THIS past week, a new space plane prototype flew on a test flight from Jiuquan Satellite Center in the Gobi Desert, landing back on Earth on Sept 6. US satellites caught the landing and part of its journey. Beijing confirmed that a Long March 2F rocket had carried a “reusable experimental spacecraft” into orbit, describing the flight as an “important breakthrough”. The plane was modelled after US X-37B, an American space plane that has been operating for nearly a decade. A space plane such as US X-37B uses a lot of sophisticated equipment powered by state-of-the-art semiconductors. While China presented the experimental plane as a huge breakthrough, the truth is that it remains dependent on foreign semiconductor equipment manufacturers such as Applied Mate...

With global heating, expect inferno seasons in the American West

A firefighter battles the Creek Fire in Madera County, Calif., which has burned more than 175,000 acres. (Noah Berger / Associated Press)More than 3.1 million acres have burned in California this year — some 3% of the state — with many wildfires still at zero containment and months of fire season left to go. This far exceeds the previous record set in 2018, when 1.7 million acres burned, including the town of Paradise. These raging fires, some exacerbated by the blistering heat last weekend, are the direct result of climate change. The planet is currently 1.0°C to 1.2°C (about 2°F) hotter than it ought to be. This excess heat is entirely due to humans, mainly from burning fossil fuels and destroying forests. These activities release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which blocks some of t...

Comfort Tech Heating & Cooling employees love pups in the office – Think Local

Photo: Contributed Annabel and Murphy When customers visit the Comfort Tech Heating and Cooling office in Kelowna, the humans who work there are often overlooked at first. Much more attention is paid to the office dogs. Photo: Contributed Solo “Our customers love it,” Comfort Tech dispatcher Paula Broadhead says. “We have a gate, so they don’t have to come right in to the dogs. We always ask people if they’re OK to come in with the dogs, and most people just love it. “They spend time with the dogs before they get down to business.” While offices seem to be dwindling in the wake of COVID-19, the number of office dogs appears to be on the rise. Comfort Tech was ahead of the curve, however, inviting employees to bring their pups to work more than seven years ago. “It’s good fo...

TipRanksGoldman Sachs: These 3 Stocks Are Poised to Surge by at Least 50%Is it time for the bears to break out the champagne glasses? Not so fast, says Goldman Sachs. Volatility has ruled the Street for the last few weeks, leading some to conclude that those with a more pessimistic outlook had been vindicated, but the firm believes stocks can still climb higher.According to Goldman Sachs’ head of U.S. equity strategy, David Kostin, the S&P 500 could still hit 3,600 by the end of the year, and 3,800 by mid-2021, on the back of vaccine-related optimism and progress with the economic reopening. This would reflect gains of 10% and 16%, respectively, should the index ultimately reach these targets.“Despite the sharp sell-off in the past week, we remain optimistic about the path of the U.S. ...

Arctic heating so much a ‘New Arctic’ climate will soon begin – study | Science | News

Thanks to climate change, the Arctic heats at almost twice the rate of the rest of the world, excluding Antarctica. This is because as the snow and ice melts, which usually deflects light particles, the darker ground beneath the freezing surface absorbs more sunlight. However, researchers have now noted that the climate has shifted so much in the Arctic Circle that researchers have stated a "new Arctic" dawn will soon come.Scientists from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) have found that it has just taken a matter of decades for the climate to shift.NCAR scientist Laura Landrum, the lead author of the study, said: "The rate of change is remarkable."It's a period of such rapid change that observations of past weather patterns no longer show what you can expect next year."Th...

Advantages Of Low-Carbon Heating Over a Gas Boiler

Across the world, low-carbon heating systems are replacing gas boilers in an attempt to tackle the escalating climate crisis and provide a more sustainable and safe form of indoor heating. Although low carbon heating system does virtually the same thing as gas boilers, an important aspect of what they do is to lower the impact on the environment. According to Jenny Campbell at Prominence Support, a boiler cover provider ‘’For years, we have been dependent on fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal to heat our home and water, and today, it accounts for as much as 30% of all energy-related carbon emissions’’, she continues ‘’By going with low carbon heating system instead of boilers, we could reduce carbon emissions drastically’’ but that’s just one part of it. 1. Global heating played part in American mastodon extinction, say scientists

© Provided by The Guardian Photograph: Thomas Lohnes/Getty Genetic diversity could shrink as animals venture into new territories because of global heating leaving them vulnerable to extinction, scientists have warned after tracking the impact of climate change on the American mastodon. Huge, hairy and with a pair of fearsome tusks, mastodons resembled stocky, hirsute elephants. The earliest fossils of American mastodons date to about 3.5-4m years ago with the creatures commonly found in wooded and swampy areas where they browsed on trees and shrubs. © Photograph: Thomas Lohnes/Getty An American mastodon skeleton excavated in the Hudson River Valley, New York state, in 1801. Sask. schools should use federal funding for masks, ventilation and heating costs: experts

The federal government has committed nearly $75 million to Saskatchewan to help school divisions prepare for the return to class. There are many ways that money could be spent, but experts say high-quality air ventilation should be a top priority.  "The ventilation is my big worry. It won't take away all the risk, but it will reduce the risk significantly when it comes to cold Saskatchewan winters," said Dr. Anne Huang, a former Saskatchewan deputy medical health officer. The federal funds are part of a $2 billion pledge to provinces and territories for the safe reopening of schools. A portion of the money will be given out this fall, with the rest expected in 2021. The Saskatchewan government said the money will be added to a pool of $40 million taken from the COVID-19 contingency fund, ...
