What it’s like to be a New York University student living on campus right now, from a mandatory 2-week quarantine in a dorm room to a $100 Grubhub gift card for meals

Akpovwa's quarantine suite is the same room she'll be in all year. She currently does not have a roommate. She says it was hard to tell how full the dorms were with quarantining students in late August, because everyone kept to their rooms.During the two-week quarantine, students were expectd to stay in their individual rooms. They were not allowed to walk around or go outside."Quarantine means not leaving your suite, except for testing. So for food and all that, they have runners that bring up food to the front of your door, three meals a day. If you have packages, they bring up your packages to your room, too," Akpovwa said.Students also had to submit two negative COVID-19 tests before being cleared to attend in-person classes and being allowed to ent...

5 ideas to copy to make open plan living work for you

© Provided by Real Homes null Open plan living: some people love it, some people hate it. The Marmite of interior design if you will. The Real Homes team is pretty divided on it – some of us believe open plan makes for a lovely sociable space, plus it's handy to have the fridge nearish to the sofa by for frequent snacking. The other half believe open plan is just a ruse to convince you are living in a stylish space when actually you are cramming up to three rooms into one smaller space and not having a separate kitchen and living room is tricky to style (despite agreeing the closeness to snacks is a pro).Anyways, regardless of your feelings on open plan, they can be difficult spaces to decorate and arrange, since there is so much going on and it has so many purposes. PIP points and payments for daily living and mobility – how to claim the enhanced rates for both parts

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a benefit for people with a long-term health condition or impairment, whether physical, sensory, mental, cognitive, intellectual, or any combination of these. It’s purpose is to make a paid contribution to the extra costs that these people may face, to help them lead full, active and independent lives. The benefit is not means-tested and is non-taxable and non-contributory. This means that entitlement to the benefit is not dependent on a person’s financial status, the amount of savings they have or on whether they have paid National Insurance contributions. It is also paid to those who are in full or part-time work as well as those out of work or in education. You could get between £23.60 and £151.40 a week if you’re aged 16 or over and have not re...

5 ways to maximise the versatility of your living room

During lockdown and beyond, our living rooms have come into their own as multifunctional spaces. No longer just a zone for downtime, for many of us they’re now doubling up as playrooms, home offices and dining spaces. Here are five inspired ideas for making the most of your living room, without compromising on style.Zone your spaceTreating your living room as a series of functional zones is one of the most effective tricks to make it work well for you. When deciding how best to arrange your living room, think about the shape of the space. In a long, open-plan space, for instance, you can use bookcases and sideboards to separate a dining area from a sitting area, so that the latter feels more like a sanctuary for relaxation and enjoying time with family. In a square room, think about wh...

Ideas for Remodeling Kitchen & Living Room Wall Partitions | Home Guides

Partitions are used to divide spaces without bearing any load. They may be stud walls, screens, bookcases or pass-throughs. Partitions between a living room and a kitchen are often used in more open floor plans to help give the two spaces some definition. If you have a plain stud wall between the two areas, remodel it to help bring more style and interest to both areas of the home. Open the Wall Solid stud walls help to give some definition to the space, but they can also darken and close off the spaces from one another too much. Instead of removing the partition, try having some openings cut into it instead. Frame out several boxes within the wall as windows that look from one room into the next. Leave these boxes open as windows, or use them to display photographs, pottery and oth...

This Livestreaming Site Brings Live Portland Music Into Your Living Room

Brian Strauss always dreamed of running a virtual local music showcase. He just never imagined that such a thing would be necessary. Strauss came up with the idea in the '90s while studying video production in college. But it never really came to fruition until venues shut down in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. Shortly thereafter, Strauss launched PDX Couch Tour, which livestreams sets five days a week by bands you'd normally find at neighborhood watering holes around the city. The upcoming calendar ranges from Laurelthirst Pub co-owner Lewi Longmire and his band the Left Coast Roasters to six-piece soul-jazz mainstays Donna Jones and the Delegation. Funded entirely by voluntary audience tips, the series is a scrappy effort that looks and sounds entirely professional. Th...

Plants are the living heart of this sleek Auckland apartment

This chic inner-city Auckland apartment may be mostly monochrome, but the spirit that drives it is evergreen. The sleek lines, impeccable styling, and holy trinity of mirrors, monochrome and metal certainly make an impression. But your eye is drawn beyond it, to the magnificent view of the city. Ocean to the left, Sky Tower to the right, red and grey villa rooftops, a couple of tower blocks and the odd spire in between – it’s like an aerial lesson in urban evolution. And, thanks to the glass balustrade and the row of succulents concealing the roof of the building in front, it’s as if this private garden unfurls forever, merging with the vista beyond.Jane Ussher/NZ House & GardenThe dining table has a second larger top which Terence Leong and Tommy Yeo keep under the bed for when friends co...

Late summer is good time to focus on the spotted lanternfly’s home and travel habits (Video) | Living

By now you have likely seen them again, those beautiful red winged plant-hoppers that threaten our vineyards, orchards, hardwoods and economy. Maybe you've even killed a few adult invasive spotted lanternflies as you were hiking.A new trap method has gained attention this summer, and its not too late to try it on your property, according to Emelie Swackhamer, a Penn State Extension horticulture educator based in Montgomery County. Sticky bands are not useful now for adult spotted lanternflies. She suggests killing the pest by stomping, hitting with a fly swatter or sucking them up with a shop vacuum first. Experts say this is the time of year to really focus on the pests' favorite habitat (Ailanthus altissima trees, more commonly known as tree of heaven) an...

Cats and dogs living under the same roof? Why not?

By Gregg Flowers  |  Sarasota Herald-Tribune Question: We’d like to bring a cat into our home, and we already have a 2-year-old mixed breed dog. What’s the process for acclimating a dog and a cat? Answer: Contrary to what cartoons taught most of us, dogs and cats are not natural enemies. Guaranteed, any dog or cat who has a severe reaction to the other has had a bad experience in the past. This is why a new kitten and a little puppy, once introduced, pretty much develop into the best of friends of their own volition. If your dog is fairly laid back and doesn’t have a lot of “prey drive,” getting him used to a cat will be easier. It will be up to you to protect your new kitty and set up introductions carefully so that she feels safe and has a mellow experience getting acquainted with your do...
